The client reached out to us mid-project to expand upon the work of their previous architect. The brief was to literally blow the roof off the living space, expanding upwards to collect as much light as allowable under the codes in the El Cerrito hills. The required daylight plane allowed over 3 feet of additional roof height at most of the living area. Maintaining the existing eaves provided a “shelf” bouncing light through the new clerestory windows and lighting the vast ceiling. Using stained wood at the underside of all the eaves united the design and provided visual interest from below.
